Monkeys can learn the symbolic meaning of tokens, and exchange them to get a reward. Monkeys can also learn the symbolic value of a token by observing conspecifics but it is not clear if they can learn passively by observing other actors, e.g., humans. To answer this question, we tested two monkeys in a token exchange paradigm in three experiments. Monkeys learned token values through observation of human models exchanging them. We used, after a phase of object familiarization, different sets of tokens. One token of each set was rewarded with a bit of apple. Other tokens had zero value (neutral tokens). Each token was presented only in one set. During the observation phase, monkeys watched the human model exchange tokens and watched them consume rewards (vicarious rewards). In the test phase, the monkeys were asked to exchange one of the tokens for food reward. Sets of three tokens were used in the first experiment and sets of two tokens were used in the second and third experiments. The valuable token was presented with different probabilities in the observation phase during the first and second experiments in which the monkeys exchanged the valuable token more frequently than any of the neutral tokens. The third experiments examined the effect of unequal probabilities. Our results support the view that monkeys can learn from non-conspecific actors through vicarious reward, even a symbolic task like the token-exchange task.  相似文献

Questions: (1) What is the water threshold for shrub seedling establishment in arid scrubland? (2) How do seedling root growth morphological traits affect the water threshold required for seedling establishment? Location: Arid scrubland, Atacama Desert, north‐central Chile. Methods: We conducted a field experiment with nine native shrub species under a gradient of simulated rainfall to test if species with deep root architecture have higher seedling survival rates and establish more successfully during water pulses. Results: Seedling survival rate was very low; only 2% of the 12 150 planted seedlings survived the first summer drought. Seedling survival required at least 206 mm of water, which is twice the average rainfall and roughly equivalent to the precipitation during an ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) event in this region. Seedling survival at the onset of the summer drought was best explained by leaf habit, root length and initial seedling size. However, only Senna cumingii seedlings survived through the first year. S. cumingii seedlings had distinctively longer roots than the other shrub species, enabling them to reach moister soil layers. Conclusions: Water conditions resembling rainy years enhance shrub seedling establishment in the Atacama Desert, but the effects of higher water availability are strongly dependent on the shrub species. Rapid and deep rooting appears to be a very important functional trait for successful first‐year survival in this arid system where water availability is highly episodic.  相似文献

Mercury distribution and partitioning was studied in the River Idrijca system, draining the area of the former Idrija mercury mine, Slovenia. Mercury dynamics were assessed by speciation analysis of mercury in water and river bed sediment samples during a 2-year study at locations on the River Idrijca and its major tributaries. Simultaneously, the influence of some major physico-chemical parameters that influence the fate of mercury in the aquatic environment was investigated. The distribution of mercury species in the River Idrijca catchment indicated contamination from mine tailings distributed in the town of Idrija and erosion of contaminated soils. The partitioning between dissolved and particulate mercury phases in river water was found to be mostly controlled by the variable content of suspended solids resulting from changing hydrological conditions and complexation with various ligands present in river water, among which dissolved organic carbon (DOC) seems to be the most important. Overall results indicate that mercury is transported downstream from the mining area mainly as finely suspended material including colloids rather than in the dissolved phase. This riverine transport occurs mostly during short, but extreme hydro-meteorological conditions when remobilization of mercury from the river bed sediments occurs. A significant part of the mercury particulate phase in water corresponds to cinnabar particles. During its transport, important Hg transformation mechanisms that increase the risk of mercury uptake by biota take place, evidenced by the increase in the relative contribution of reactive mercury (HgR), dissolved gaseous mercury (DGM) and monomethylmercury (MeHg) downstream from the Idrija mine. However, our data revealed relatively low methylation efficiency in this contaminated river system. We attribute this to the site specific physico-chemical conditions responsible for making inorganic mercury unavailable and limiting the capacity of methylating bacteria.  相似文献

Sugar-beet invertase preparation was found to be highly temperature-dependent in its activity (Topt = 40 °C), to be decreased by bivalent metal salts (especially CaCl2 and MgCl2 and relatively unaffected by heavy metal cations from the end of the periodic table. Inhibitors of SH groups, such as iodoacetamide andp-chloromercuribenzoate, were highly inhibitory while ouabain was a medium-strength inhibitor, with 2,4-dinitrophenol having no effect. The intracellular pH of 7.3, corresponding to the optimum for invertase (at 7.2) could be substantially decreased (to 5.8) by exposure of cells of whole sugar-beet roots to carbon dioxide in aqueous solution.  相似文献

In bovine protein C normal activation by the thrombin-thrombomodulin complex requires binding of calcium to one high affinity binding site, contained in a protein fragment that lacks the gamma-carboxyglutamic acid (Gla) region (Esmon, N. L., De Bault, L. E., and Esmon, C. T. (1983) J. Biol. Chem. 258, 5548-5553). In this work, the calcium binding to and the conformational change induced by calcium in the corresponding Gla-domainless fragment of bovine factor X, prepared by limited proteolysis by chymotrypsin, were compared with the calcium-binding properties of Gla-domainless protein C. Equilibrium dialysis experiments demonstrated that the proteolytically modified factor X has one high affinity calcium ion-binding site with Kd = 180 microM, a value almost identical to the Kd for the binding of calcium to proteolytically modified protein C. Measurements of the rate of disulfide bond reduction by thioredoxin showed that the disulfide bonds of both factor X and protein C lacking the Gla domains were more rapidly reduced in the absence than in the presence of calcium. Thus, calcium binding induces a conformational change in both proteolytically modified proteins. Calcium binding to Gla-domainless protein C is accompanied by a quenching of the intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence and by changes in the CD spectrum, indicative of perturbation of the environment of aromatic amino acids by the metal ion. However, no such changes were observed with the proteolytically modified factor X. This difference may be due to the fact that one tryptophan residue (in position 84) is present in the light chain of the proteolytically modified protein C but none in the light chain of the modified factor X. The light chain of factor X has beta-hydroxyaspartic acid in position 64 which is homologous to the beta-hydroxyaspartic acid in position 71 in the light chain of protein C. Our results are compatible with the hypothesis that beta-hydroxyaspartic acid is involved in the Ca2+ ion binding.  相似文献

Rabbit antisera against homogeneous rat liver thioredoxin and thioredoxin reductase (NADPH-oxidized thioredoxin oxidoreductase, E.C. 1.6.4.5) were prepared and used for immunohistochemical analysis in adult rats. Immunoreactive thioredoxin and thioredoxin reductase were widely distributed in tissues and organs, but varied a lot between cell types. Generally, epithelial cells, neuronal cells and secretory cells, both exocrine and endocrine, showed high immunoreactivity whereas mesenchymal cells with exceptions showed low activity. Surface lining epithelial and keratinizing cells showed high activity. The immunofluorescence was localized in the cytoplasm of cells with enrichments at secretory granules, at the plasma membrane or in the subplasma membrane zone. Variations in secretory cells were seen related to feeding and starvation and to metabolic activity. The distribution of thioredoxin and thioredoxin reductase is compatible with function in thiol-disulfide interchange reaction related to protein synthesis, intracellular transport and different forms of secretion.  相似文献

A series of mutations that alter the pattern of segmentation in Drosophila embryos has been identified. Mutations in one of these loci, hairy, delete the posterior part of each odd-numbered segment and the anterior part of each even-numbered segment; although the amount deleted depends on the allele. Weak alleles delete less than an entire segment and do not always eliminate structures in every other segment. Strong alleles show the same periodicity in the pattern defect, but delete regions greater than one segment. In such cases the remaining parts of the pattern duplicate with mirror-image symmetry. To study the function of this gene at a molecular level, sequences from the hairy locus were cloned. This was facilitated by the hairy1 (h1) mutation, which is caused by the insertion of the transposable element, gypsy.  相似文献

A synthetic IgG-binding domain based on staphylococcal protein A was designed with the aid of sequence comparisons and computer graphic analysis. A strategy, utilizing non-palindromic restriction sites, was used to overcome the difficulties of introducing site-specific changes into the repetitive gene. A single mutagenized gene fragment was polymerized to different multiplicities, and the different gene products were expressed in Escherichia coli. Using this scheme, protein A-like proteins composed of different numbers of IgG-binding domains were produced. These domains were changed to lack asparagine--glycine dipeptide sequences as well as methionine residues and are thus, in contrast to native protein A, resistant to treatment with hydroxylamine and cyanogen bromide.  相似文献

The forms of somatomedin present in the adult human brain have been characterized in this study. Two peptides were purified by acidification, size exclusion chromatography, affinity chromatography, FPLC and HPLC. Structural analysis identified these peptides as the variant form of IGF-1 with a truncated N-terminal region earlier isolated from human fetal brain and IGF-2. The presence of the truncated IGF-1 variant and IGF-2 in the human CNS suggests their role as neuropeptides.  相似文献

The cellular distribution of thioredoxin and protein M1 of ribonucleotide reductase in adult rat tissues was investigated with immunohistochemical techniques using specific antisera. Tissues with high or low frequency of either mitotic or meiotic cell divisions were compared. Thioredoxin was demonstrated in many cells types that showed no detectable protein M1 of ribonucleotide reductase. A few cell types with protein M1 immunoreactivity also contained immunoreactive thioredoxin. However, in most cells no such co-localization could be demonstrated. This lack of correlation between cells containing subunit M1 of ribonucleotide reductase and the thioredoxin indicates that thioredoxin is not the physiologist hydrogen donor for ribonucleotide reductase in rat tissues and that the expression of two enzymes is differently regulated.  相似文献
